SHILLONG: Meghalaya recorded two more COVID-19 deaths taking the toll to 38 during the last 24 hours. Both the casualties were registered in East Khasi Hills district.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya registered 73 new COVID-19 cases, with East Khasi Hills accounting for the maximum number of 59 (Armed and paramilitary forces: six; civilians: 53); followed by West Khasi Hills: 12 (Armed and paramilitary forces: four; civilians: eight); North Garo Hills and West Jaintia Hills (one each).

Meghalaya also reported 15 recovered cases on Monday with West Garo Hills district registering six followed by Ri-Bhoi (four); South West Garo Hills (three); and East Jaintia Hills (two).

Altogether 1,33,259 samples have been sent for testing till date. Of these, while 1,27,589 samples tested negative, reports of 937 samples are being awaited.

Referring to the new casualties registered, Director of Health Services (MI), Dr Aman War said, "On September 19, Jyotikha Ghosh (46 years) of Upper Jail Road was shifted from Woodland Hospital to Nazareth Hospital. She had initially tested positive for the virus at Woodland Hospital. She, however, died at around 6:20 pm the same day at Nazareth Hospital. Nazareth Hospital authorities say that she died of COVID-19. The patient was also suffering from severe anemia.

"Another patient, Jyotimoi Sharma (48 years) from Tripura, died at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) at 5 pm September 19. He was admitted there on September 8, where he subsequenlty tested positive for COVID-19."

Dr War also informed that on Monday evening they received information that a COVID-19 patient from Karimganj in Assam registered as Ranjit Kumar Das (75 years) had gone to NEIGHRIMS on September 20 for treatment. "He expired at around 10 am on Monday. His death will not be counted in Meghalaya because he had tested positive for the virus in Assam," added Dr War.

Dr War also informed that 38,953 persons have entered the State till date.
