Meghalaya Democratic Alliance delegation to meet Amit Shah over ILP

SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Monday said that he will be leading a delegation of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) coalition to New Delhi to seek an appointment with Home Minister Amit Shah.

"In fact we are going tomorrow to Delhi. We have sought an appointment with Home Minister Amit Shah. I hope we will be getting the appointment," the Chief Minister said.

Conrad also said that appointment to meet the Union Home Minister has been sought for February 18 evening or February 19 morning but confirmation is yet to come.

It may be mentioned that the Meghalaya Assembly had on December 19 last year passed a resolution to implement Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the State.

Soon after passing the resolution, a delegation of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) met the Home Minister but were told to come after Christmas. The meet to discuss ILP was again postponed on two occasions.

The last time when the Chief Minister met Shah, the former was told to come after the Delhi elections.

Media reports suggest that Shah was non-committal on the Meghalaya government's request and had promised to discuss about the issue after the Delhi Assembly election.

The ILP regime was extended to Manipur on December 11 with President Ram Nath Kovind signing the order. Mizoram, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh have already been under the ILP regime for several decades.
