Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) yet to learn art of governance, says Mukul Sangma

SHILLONG: Leader of opposition in the Meghalaya Assembly and Congress leader, Dr Mukul Sangma on Monday said that the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government is yet to learn the “art of governance”.

When reminded that Chief Minister, Conrad Kongkal Sangma pointed out that the State government is under financial pressure and may not be able to reduce value added tax (VAT) to cut the prices of fuel, Dr Sangma said that during the Congress’ rule the State was also facing financial crunch but it managed to steer the State through. “It is a question of knowing the art of governance. It is not everyone’s cup of tea,” the Leader of Opposition said.

Recently, the State government has hinted that there will be no reduction in value added tax, or VAT, as far as petrol is concerned even as spiralling fuel prices continue to burn a hole in consumers’ pocket. “We did it during our time, did we have any financial crisis? we did but we initiated different programmes including health insurance which is the first of its kind,” Dr Mukul Sangma added.

Dr Sangma also alleged that the NDA government’s ambitious healthcare scheme, Ayushman Bharat-National Health Protection Scheme (AB-NHPS) was replicated from Meghalaya’s – Megha Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS). “Even the bidding document is replicated from the MHIS scheme,” the Meghalaya opposition leader said. The AICC general secretary in-charge, Meghalaya Luizinho Faleiro hit out at the BJP government said, “This is a culture of intolerance and culture of vengeance, vendetta and hatred and they think that by promoting this polarisation they can rule the country forever and ever,” he added.
