SHILLONG: Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar met with a group of over 200 registered street vendors and hawkers from Shillong's famous Khyndailad to talk about their upcoming move. The purpose of the recent meeting was to discuss issues and look for a workable solution for the suppliers.
The hawkers were reassured by Deputy CM Dhar during the meeting that the government will find a suitable relocation site for them. In order to guarantee a seamless transition, he underlined the significance of collaboration between the government and the vendors.
Speaking to the media, Dhar said, “We understand the challenges faced by the hawkers. The government is working diligently to find a solution that is beneficial to all stakeholders.”
The convenience of the hawkers would be taken into consideration when making the ultimate decision, he added, acknowledging the continuous discussion surrounding the relocation.
In accordance with government procedures, the Deputy CM underlined that the new area will only be used by properly registered merchants. The government and the hawkers' group have been at odds over the relocation problem.
The government's strategy was "wilfully misleading," according to the Meghalaya & Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers and Street Vendors Association, which vehemently denied reports of earlier talks.
Demanding that the laws governing street hawking be properly implemented, the vendors' intransigence was demonstrated by their continuous operations until late at night.
