TURA: The newly-appointed Director General of Police (DGP) of Meghalaya, Dr Lajja Ram Bishnoi, is on a maiden trip to the Garo Hills. On Tuesday, he visited Don Bosco College, Tura and interacted with the students and created awareness on drug abuse and the consequences of such abuse. In his speech, he stressed on the type of drugs, the consequences and harm caused due to use of drugs and what the teachers can do to help drug users in schools and colleges. The session was interactive and touched the young participants.

"Use of drugs destroys family life," the DGP stressed. He implored the students to avoid drugs. He said that the students should not fall prey to drugs. One of the ways is to avoid peer group pressure. "You should have good friends who should help you grow," the DGP said. He added that the best gift is our own body and one should cultivate the habit of playing sports. "Playing is one of the ways in which one can avoid getting into substance abuse," Bishnoi added.

Bishnoi encouraged the students by saying that life is precious as a diamond and that it should be tended with care. "Health is important for life and that life is of no use without health. We may have plenty of money but if our health is poor what is the use of having money?."

He said that the best way to have good health and wealth is to avoid drugs.

Fr Bivan Rodriques Mukhim, principal of the Don Bosco College, welcomed the DGP and other dignitaries who included the DIG Western Range CVS Reddy, Superintendent of Police (SP), West Garo Hills Vivekanand Rathore, Additional Superintendent of Police, West Garo Hills Vikash Kumar, Assistant Superintendent of Police, West Garo Hills, Pankaj Kumar, Deputy SP, Headquarter KS Marak, Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Raksamgre Chalang Ch Momin, vice-principal of the college Fr Abhilash VJ, and principal of Don Bosco CTE Rev Fr Zacharias George.

The students presented a welcome song to welcome the dignitaries.

After the talk, the DGP signed the 'Climate Champions' campaign organized by the Environment Studies Department of the college and distributed plant saplings to the participants. He requested the students to plant the saplings and tend it with care.
