SHILLONG: Top- level officers of Assam Rifles, which is known widely as the 'Sentinels of the North East', met at its headquarters in the state capital here to discuss on ways to improve the operational and administrative efficiency of the force.

This was stated by an Assam Rifles spokesperson here on Saturday, at the end of the Assam Rifles Inspector Generals' Conference 2022, held on Friday.

The Assam Rifles is a central paramilitary force, with their headquarters at Shillong, and is responsible for border security, counter-insurgency, and maintaining law and order in Northeast India. It is also fondly referred to as the 'Force that Binds the North East' because of the humanitarian aspects with which the force is connected.

The meeting of the force's top honchos also deliberated on taking up measures to ensure that the the para-military force continue to live up to their sobriquet of 'Sentinels of the North East', while working closely with the local people to maintain peace and tranquility in the region, it was further informed by the official.

The deliberations at Headquarters, Directorate General of Assam Rifles in Shillong were held as part of the Assam Rifles Inspector Generals' Conference 2022, on Friday, which was chaired by Lt Gen PC Nair, Director General, Assam Rifles, and attended by the force's Formation Commanders, Battalion Commanders and Staff Officers.

AR sources informed that the conference laid emphasis on 'drawing lessons from past experience in various fields and improving upon these aspects for better efficiency of the force'. The overall objective was to live up to their title of 'Sentinels of the North East' and also their role as 'Force that Binds the North East'," the source further said.

Lt Gen Nair congratulated the Formation and Unit commanders for ensuring conditions of peace and tranquility in the areas under their respective responsibility, while exhorting them to remain ever vigilant in the face of the volatile and dynamic environment in present times.

He also emphasised the fact that the Assam Rifles has always identified itself with the people of the North East and engaged in ensuring their security and well-being.

The Assam Rifles Inspector Generals' Conference, with the focus on improving the operational and administrative efficiency of the force, is usually conducted twice a year.
