SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) has announced that the city of Shillong will be facing four hours of power cuts from Saturday. This announcement came on Friday after a significant increase in the water levels of the Umium reservoir.

The northeastern states have received a good amount of rainfall in the past few days. Although this has caused massive flooding in different parts of Assam, the residents of the capital of Meghalaya can now breathe easy. The rise in the rains has led to an increase in the water levels in the Umiam reservoir which is used to operate the hydroelectric plant which in turn supplies electricity to the city.

On Friday, the official report mentioned the water levels in the reservoir to be at 3205.75 feet, which has also been mentioned as the maximum level of water in the lake. This led to a reduction in the number of hours of power cuts in the city. Shillong was facing five hours of load shedding till Friday, which has been decreased to four hours from Saturday onwards.

The Ri Bhoi district administration has also released a warning mentioning the people living downstream from the hydroelectric project to exercise proper precaution as water might be released at any time from the dam if there is any further increase in the water levels and it goes beyond the safe levels. This warning was released on Friday by the DC office.

According to reports, the Shillong and Tura of Meghalaya were facing power cuts of up to 8 hours in recent times. Other parts of the state saw up to 10 hours of load shedding.

Meanwhile, the flood situation in Assam has turned grimmer. Floods have affected a population of 67,689 in the State. Till yesterday, the number of flood-affected districts was 10. Today, the number increased to 17. Among these, the worst affected districts are Chirang, Bongaigaon and Baksa. While the number of affected villages was 179 yesterday, today the number shot up to 317. The Brahmaputra, Beki, Buridihing and Sankosh rivers are flowing above the danger level.
