Shillong, July 30: The United Achik Youth Federation (UAYF) has requested the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) to improve power supply in the border villages namely from Mawplun to Moheshkhola of South West Khasi Hills district, covering around 40 to 50 villages.

According to the president of UAYF, South West Khasi Hills Zone, Sanggra M Marak, due to the prolonged negligence by the government, these villages always run short of electricity supply and citizens are living a “painful life” due to absence of regular power supply. “The rural citizens must be provided with equal rights, opportunities, facilities and development as their urban counterparts for equal progress and development of the state,” Marak said. He also said that due to erratic power supply, the students are hard hit.

The UAYF also pointed out that another reason for irregular power supply in the area was due to unauthorised individual who either disconnect the main line or mess up the connections of transformer fitted in different locations.

The UAYF also urged the MeECL to provide a systematic method of billing the consumers.
