
SHILLONG: The Estimates Committee of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, under the chairmanship of Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem, met on December 16 to assess the pace of implementation of major projects of the government.
Officials from the Education, Health, Public Health Engineering, and Community & Rural Development departments were present at the conference hall of the Members' Hostel in Shillong.
Discussions focused on improving infrastructure and service delivery in the sectors. The Education Department updated Block Institutes of Teacher Education (BITE) and residential schools, with a focus on accelerating the Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) in Ri-Bhoi and East Garo Hills to complete them by 2025.
The PHE Department under the water supply sector said that there has been a report on progress in Jal Jeevan Mission but it also confessed that it still faces issues in the border areas. The committee recommended that there should be a detailed status report to ensure constant monitoring and improvement.
The Health Department claimed that the construction of Maternal and Child Health (MCH) hospitals at Nongstoin and Umsning is to be completed in 2025. Improving access through upgradation of civil hospitals, PHCs, and CHCs was a thrust area.
The C&RD Department stated the 70-80 percent completion of BDO offices, and the committee members suggested time-bound delivery that will fortify rural governance. Also, Committee Chair Mayralborn Syiem said that the discussions must have tangible outcomes on the ground.
Attended by MLAs and officials from various departments, the meeting reaffirmed the collective commitment to achieving inclusive development for Meghalaya.
