Shillong: South West Khasi Hills District police have arrested another suspect, Mubarak Hussain of Bangladesh, from Rongdangai village, raising the total number of arrested accused to five. Police said all of them will be produced before the court today.
“Today we are producing all five of them in the Mawkyrwat court,” Superintendent of Police, South West Khasi Hills, B. Jyrwa said. “Once we get their custody, we will be able to interrogate them and determine the real cause of this incident.”
The police further confirmed that a Bangladeshi police constable, Marufur Rahman, was grievously injured in the incident after being beaten by the public and is currently in hospital.
The arrests follow a violent cross-border incident reported on August 8, 2025. On that day, at around 11 a.m., information was received that during the intervening night of August 7 and 8, 8–9 unknown persons had entered a shop at Rongdangai village and taken Shri Balsrang Marak hostage, moving him towards New Rongdangai village. While being taken away, the victim managed to free himself and ran into a house in New Rongdangai village, locking the door from inside. The miscreants chased him, banged on the door, and fired several rounds. The terrified family eventually opened the door, after which the attackers entered and assaulted Marak before fleeing the area.
Later that afternoon, at around 2:15 p.m., a quarry owner reported that armed miscreants had entered his land near Khonjoy. The Officer-in-Charge of Nonghyllam Police Station was directed to respond, and upon arrival, the suspects fled into the forest, ignoring warning shots fired in the air. Officers noted that they were carrying small arms.
A search of the area led to the recovery of weapons, tools, communication devices, identification documents, Bangladeshi and Indian currency, medical prescriptions from Bangladesh, and micro explosives.
The following morning, villagers of Khonjoy B apprehended one suspect, identified as Mefus Rehman of Comilla, Bangladesh, and handed him over to Nonghyllam Police Station. Later, a combined team of police and BSF arrested three more suspects from Chibak forest, identified as Jangir Alom of Jamalpur, Bangladesh, Meruphur Rahman of Jamalpur, Bangladesh, and Saem Hussain of Narayanganj, Bangladesh.
A case has been registered under Nonghyllam PS Case No. 09/2025 U/s 3(5)/109(2)/118(2)/140(1)/308(5)/332(a)/333 BNS, read with Sections 25/27 of the Arms Act and Section 14 of the Foreigners Act. Combing operations are continuing to locate the remaining suspects, police said.
