SHILLONG: Artist and filmmaker Raphael Warjri from Meghalaya opened up about his dedication to art, calling it more than just execution. In order to ensure that people comprehend and value the state, he said, the objective is to showcase Meghalaya's rich cultural legacy.
He went on to say that art is more than a "superficial execution" and added, "My involvement in art is not just for art's sake. It is beyond that."
He added that one of his most important tasks was making a sculpture of U Tirot Singh, the legendary freedom fighter from Meghalaya.
According to Warjri, the sculpture was displayed as a tribute to the warrior's past ties to Dhaka, Bangladesh, where he was previously detained before passing away.
The Indian High Commission in Dhaka oversaw a larger project that included the artwork. Warjri conveyed his appreciation to the Meghalaya government for giving him the responsibility. But during Bangladesh's political unrest, the sculpture was demolished.
Warjri is still dedicated to his goal of promoting and conserving Meghalaya's cultural legacy in spite of the damage. According to Warjri, the goal of contemporary art is to uncover deeper meanings within the depictions of a certain work of art.
"This kind of involvement is a passion, and dedication to the work has given a fillip so we can work in a way that satisfies the customer and we are also content when the job is done," he added.
He added that he is engaged in projects related to the Archaeological Survey of India, ICAR, and the MES 101 Area.
