The Meghalaya administration has revealed that the radial gates of the Umiam Concrete Dam will be opened in case of heavy rainfall.

Shillong: The Deputy Commissioners of two districts of Assam, Kamrup (M) and Kamrup (R) have been issued a letter by the Meghalaya administration. The letter states that there is a possibility of flood downstream of Umiam River and the areas beyond the Umiam Dam in the next two or three days. Therefore, the two districts of Assam have been put on high alert due to possible floods.

The Chief Engineer of Hydro Planning and Hydro Construction, Me. P. G. C. L. Shillong, M Rymbai announced that the present water level of the Umiam Reservoir was 3207.42 Ft. as of 8 am of September 8. Therefore, in case of heavy rainfall in the catchment area, the Umiam Concrete Dam's radial gates will need to be opened so that excess water is released from the reservoir.

Further, the Meghalaya government announced, "All persons residing or working in the downstream of the Umiam concrete dam are therefore cautioned against engaging in any activity near the banks of the river Umiam. Since the level of water in the river may suddenly rise due to opening of gates of the dam. However, all efforts will be made to regulate the discharge of water through the gates to the minimum."

In other news, Kongthong village of Meghalaya, which is also popularly known as the whistling village, has bagged selection for its entry to UNWTO (The World Tourism Organisation) 'Best Tourism Village'. Two other villages in India has also been selected for the same.

The village of Kongthong gained popularity among tourists for its unique ancient tradition. As per the tradition, a mother does not call her child by name but instead uses a tune.
