SHILLONG: The Meghalaya government is creating a land bank to support the development of tourism infrastructure throughout the state. Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh revealed that the initiative will target regions lacking sufficient accommodation facilities, aiming to promote inclusive and sustainable tourism growth.
The government has issued a call for expressions of interest (EOI), inviting landowners and communities to collaborate with the state on developing land for tourism accommodation projects. The deadline for submissions is set for mid-January.
Lyngdoh highlighted that the land bank would play a crucial role in expanding accommodation facilities in underserved areas like Dawki. He added, “In Garo Hills, we are promoting adventure and wildlife tourism, which will draw visitors to underdeveloped regions. This initiative will benefit the entire state and is expected to create an additional one lakh jobs in the next two to three years.”
The tourism minister further explained that the land bank would enable individuals and groups to collaborate with the government through joint venture agreements. He cited Dawki as an example, where tourism has grown rapidly, but accommodation remains inadequate. “We are seeking offers from the community and landowners to part with their land and partner with the government. The EOI process is already underway, and we have set a deadline for submissions in mid-January,” he said.
