Meghalaya Government Launches Project ‘Beat Plastic Pollution with Sla & Pla

GUWAHATI: The Meghalaya government on Monday launched a project to ‘Beat Plastic Pollution with Sla & Pla’ at Laitumkhrah Parking Lot Shillong.

This initiative is basically launched to reduce the use of plastic and use environment-friendly bags and materials.

This project is a mission mode initiative by the Meghalaya State Planning Board.

According to Lambor Malngiang Chairman of the Meghalaya State Planning Board, plastic has become a universal concern and urged the people to take this problem seriously and overcome the use of plastic.

According to his statement, "These materials not only preserve our beautiful environment but can also generate income and employment, he added. All of us need to join our hands to fight this menace and preserve our beautiful environment. We must stop using plastic altogether. We can make these campaigns successful by saying NO TO PLASTIC."

He also urged the market users to make use of the Pla which means cotton bag and Sla which means leaves, which can be used and reused.

He further added that the effort, if accepted by the people will help reduce usages of 5000 single-use plastic bags at Iew Shillong alone.

Local MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh said that plastic is the object that poses one of the most dangerous threats to our environment.

The MLA also appealed to the government to install small incinerators in Iew Shillong and other major markets of the State to ensure that waste management can be done in a proper manner.
