SHILLONG: The Meghalaya government is planning to host the National Games in the early part of 2027. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma recently held a meeting with officials to assess the progress of various projects aimed at developing sports infrastructure for the event.

The Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) has proposed February-March 2027 as the target timeframe for hosting the games. This timeline is based on the expectation that most of the infrastructure projects will be completed by the end of 2025 or by March 2026 at the latest.

An official communication regarding this decision was submitted by Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Shakliar Warjri to the Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya.

The MSOA and the state government have a two-year timeline to finalize preparations. The state had previously signed a host city agreement with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) in 2018, committing to host 36 sports disciplines during the games.

The review meeting, chaired by the chief minister, was attended by key officials, including the Commissioner and Secretary of Sports and Youth Affairs, Vijay Kumar, and members of the MSOA. Efforts are being focused on ensuring the timely completion of sports facilities to meet the proposed schedule.

By setting early 2027 as the target, the state government aims to position Meghalaya as a capable and well-prepared host for the prestigious National Games, leveraging its ongoing infrastructure development projects.
