Meghalaya government to review fee structures of educational institutions

SHILLONG: Meghalaya Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma has informed that the state government will soon issue directives to all educational institutions, particularly those receiving state support, to review and justify their existing fee structures.

Speaking to the media, the Education Minister emphasized the need for greater accountability and inclusivity in educational access. “We will write to all educational institutions, especially those supported by the government, seeking clarification and justification for the high fees being charged. Institutions receiving state support have a social responsibility, and we will be issuing notices to that effect,” he stated.

He urged educational institutions across Meghalaya to adopt a student-friendly approach, with special attention to those coming from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. “There are many brilliant students from rural areas who, despite their potential, are unable to gain admission to premier institutions due to financial constraints. I appeal to all institutions, especially those supported by the state, to show compassion and support for these students,” Sangma said.

In a move aimed at elevating education standards, the Education Minister also announced that Meghalaya will soon implement the School Quality Assessment and Assurance Framework (SQAAF), inspired by the NAAC model used in higher education.
