SHILLONG: In order to curb the COVID-19 infection, the Meghalaya government has decided to extend its lockdown in the East Khasi Hills district until May 17.

The announcement was made by Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong. Earlier, the lockdown was supposed to be lifted after May 10.

Meanwhile, the government has issued an advisory for the extended lockdown days.

> Banks and post offices will be allowed to open with limited employees.

> Home delivery will continue.

> Construction works will be allowed in sites where employees/laborers stay within the premises. However, no one will be allowed to move out of such premises. Necessary instructions will be issued to employers by the DCs.

> Shops selling essential commodities will continue to remain open with strict SOP.

> Class 12 exams will be postponed again and the Education Department will issue the notification.

Weekend lockdown will also continue throughout the state from 10 pm every Friday up to 5 AM every Monday.

On the other hand, Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma has urged the religious leaders to play an active role in assisting the government in fighting the deadly COVID-19.

Sangma held a review meeting at Williamnagar town on Friday along with the Deputy Commissioner and other health officials. Speaking after the meeting, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma stated, "The presentation gave a picture that the current situation seems to be under control as of now. There 44 active cases.

He also asked the community and religious leaders to ensure that the people wear masks, maintain social distancing and go for vaccination in their respective PHC, CHC, and hospitals.

The Chief Minister also said that the government will adopt a three-pronged strategy of containment, vaccination, and health care to fight COVID-19. Sangma said that containment is the best strategy and the only way to ensure that things do not get out of control. 'But the challenge is to ensure that life is not affected in an adverse manner and yet the health concerns are balanced,' added the Chief Minister.
