SHILLONG: The Meghalaya government has not yet established a clear timeline for the transition of the Sohra civil sub-division into a full district.

During a cabinet meeting held in Sohra, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma addressed questions regarding the status of this proposed upgrade, but no definitive date was provided for when it might occur.

Although the administration has expressed support for establishing Sohra as the headquarters of a new district, the chief minister highlighted that several challenges need to be resolved before this objective can be realized.

“Our government is committed to bringing administration closer to the people, but there are significant geographical and financial hurdles to overcome,” Sangma stated.

“We are neither outright rejecting nor accepting the demand; rather, these issues require careful examination and thoughtful deliberation,” he stated.

The Sohra District Demand Forum has been advocating for the creation of a separate district, but the proposal is still under review.

Chief Minister Sangma has stated that the government is not prepared to make a concrete decision on the issue at this time.
