SHILLONG: In compliance with the Supreme Court of India’s judgment dated February 13, 2025, the Education Department of the Government of Meghalaya has directed three senior officials to conduct an inspection at CMJ University. The visit, carried out on February 14, 2025, aimed to ensure the security of the campus premises.

An inspection team, along with the Executive Magistrate of Ri-Bhoi District and the police, met with the Vice Chancellor and Registrar of CMJ University. They informed the university that an Administrator would be appointed and ordered an immediate stop to all financial transactions, administrative work, and academic activities.

Furthermore, CMJ University has been directed to ensure that no assets are moved from the campus. The officials also instructed that no files, computers, hard disks, or other materials should be removed from the premises.

The developments come in the wake of the Supreme Court's ruling, underscoring regulatory oversight on the University's affairs. The situation is being closely monitored by the authorities to ensure compliance with the directives.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Thursday, February 13, upheld the decision taken by the Meghalaya Government in 2014 to dissolve the Chander Mohan Jha (CMJ) University, a private university.

The Court also held that the University's decision to self-appoint a Chancellor, without the approval of the Visitor (Governor), was illegal. The state government had ordered the dissolution of the university by invoking powers under Section 48 of the CMJ University Act for "mismanagement, maladministration, indiscipline, fraudulent intent, and failure in the accomplishment of the objectives of the university."
