SHILLONG: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU) Siju Regional Unit has demanded an investigation into the Swadesh Darshan Scheme, which allocated ₹9.10 crore for tourism development projects near Siju Caves in Meghalaya. The union has raised serious concerns over the poor quality of infrastructure, which has already fallen into disrepair even before its official inauguration.
In a complaint submitted to the Tourism Minister through the Deputy Commissioner of South Garo Hills on Friday, the GSU pointed out multiple deficiencies in projects funded under the centrally sponsored Swadesh Darshan Scheme by the Ministry of Tourism. The scheme allocated substantial funds for several projects, including the Adventure Park (₹2.5 crore), the Bird Watch Tower and Siju Cave Interpretation Centre with Cafeteria (₹3.16 crore), the Approach Road and Parking (₹2.19 crore), and Solar Illumination and Landscaping (₹50.66 lakh). However, these projects are reportedly deteriorating, showing visible cracks, leaks, and other structural failures, suggesting the use of substandard materials and poor execution of work.
The complaint also questioned the construction of a zipline in Siju, which cost ₹75 lakh. Even though the project received a completion certificate, it was unexpectedly moved to another location with government approval. However, an RTI reply dated December 17, 2024, confirmed that the zipline was relocated, but it is nowhere to be found in Siju or anywhere in South Garo Hills district. The GSU believes this relocation harms the planned development of Siju Caves and is completely unacceptable.
"This poor management not only wastes public money but also harms the reputation of our tourism industry. Tourists expect good facilities that improve their experience, but with such badly built structures, their safety and satisfaction are at serious risk," said Welbingstar Sangma, Secretary of the GSU Siju Regional Unit.
The union has asked the government to look into the issue carefully and punish those responsible. It also wants a clear check of how the funds were used and quick action to repair or rebuild the structures properly.
