SHILLONG: The Meghalaya High Court ordered that the probe into the unnatural death of an Assam police trainee, who was on training at the North Eastern Police Academy (NEPA) at Umiam, be completed by May 31, 2025.

This order comes in the wake of the unfortunate accident that took place on March 9, 2022, when the trainee drowned in a swimming pool at the academy.

But the victim's family denies the official version of accidental drowning, having registered a first information report (FIR) opposing this version. They claim that 29 police officers were at the spot during the incident, raising doubt about the circumstances of the trainee's death.

In light of these concerns, the family has called for a comprehensive investigation, the identification of those responsible, the framing of charges, and a prompt criminal trial. During the proceedings, counsel for the police authorities informed the court that the investigation is still ongoing, which has drawn criticism from the bench.

Chief Justice IP Mukerji expressed disbelief that the investigation remains incomplete after three years, which has hindered the filing of a charge sheet.

The court has now instructed the authorities to finalize the investigation by the specified date, ensuring that the charge sheet is submitted to the trial court. The trial court is expected to proceed with the case in accordance with legal protocols and its schedule.
