Shillong: The Meghalaya High Court and other subordinate courts will take up cases considered as “urgent matters” with effect from March 17 to 27 as part of the preventive step to contain coronavirus in the State. Although, there has not been COVID-19 case being reported in the State, the Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court along with the practising lawyers held a meeting in Shillong on Monday.

Informing about the outcome of the meeting, secretary general of the Meghalaya High Court Bar Association VK Kynta said the decision will come in the form of notification, besides adding that the Bar associations throughout the State will also shut down in the mentioned period. However, he said that this should not be construed as a shutdown of the apex courts and other subordinated courts.

“They will function to take up urgent matters that would be decided by the Registry”, Kynta stated, even as the senior advocate urged the litigants to restrain from coming to the Bar association and the courts because the hearings will be adjourned in the next eleven days.
