SHILLONG: The meghalaya high court on Wednesday has announced that the state government should take action against the culprits involved in the police 'vehicle scam'

Recently a top tier inquiry led to ''scam'' within the police department itself regarding illegal acquisition of vehicles.  A case has been registered against AIG Gabriel K. langrai by the CID. The team raided his entire house and later on they arrested him. lngrai was arrested from his residence for his alleged crime of misappropriating funds in the purchase of vehicles. This was done under the Prevention of Corruption Act. According to sources top officials from the Meghalaya police department were involved in this scam.

A bail plea was filed before the High Court consecutively on the 1st and 2nd of November, but judge refused it for hearing.

''The matter should be cross checked and monitored at the top-level to make sure that the public funds are recovered and the accused is brought to book '' stated the Meghalaya high court.

It is ensured by the Meghalaya government that the assets of AIG Gabriel K langrai will be frozen until he is proven innocent, as the amount of misappropriation is more than Rs 3 crore. The team lead by the inspector general of police, Mukesh Kumar Singh inquired alleged mishandling in acquiring vehicles and use of fuel coupons as well.

29 non-registered vehicles, inconsistent and varied documents, purchasing of cheap vehicles against sanction of expensive models, unofficial procurement, and vehicles for personal use was reportedly found during the investigation. The report also revealed that the import and export of these vehicles were done and supervised by the AIGP through different people linked to him.

'' It is clear that the government vehicles which are meant for official duties only, are being misused for personal pleasures '' the report stated.
