SHILLONG: A roundtable discussion on waste management was held recently at IIM Shillong to find solutions for waste problems in the area. The event was organized by the Northeast Centre for Community Impact and Engagement (NE-CCIE) and included representatives from organizations like the Meghalaya Institute of Governance, Bethany Society, OCU, and Synjuk ki Nongsynshar Shnong Nongthymmai Pyllun.

The session was started by Prof. DP Goyal, Director of IIM Shillong, who spoke about the need to work together with schools, the government, and local communities to fix waste problems. Col. Dinesh Adhikari, Chief Administrative Officer of IIM Shillong, talked about how the campus is working to reduce waste and be more sustainable.

The discussion, led by Dr. Teidorlang Lyngdoh, Chair of NE-CCIE, covered important topics like separating waste, raising awareness, adding labeled bins for different types of waste, and setting up water ATMs to reduce plastic use and improve health.

Participants talked about involving local young people in waste management to help the community and create jobs. They also said riverside communities should work together to cut down pollution and protect the environment. They discussed setting up recycling and composting centers to reuse materials and make energy from waste.

The event underscored the importance of government collaboration, with a focus on supportive policies and infrastructure to encourage waste segregation and recycling. They also talked about using pilot projects and collecting data to understand how waste is produced and create solutions for both city and village areas.

The session ended with a shared commitment to advancing Shillong's sustainable waste management practices, emphasising the importance of innovation, community participation, and policy support in creating a cleaner, more sustainable urban environment.
