BARAPANI: In a major crackdown, an illegal alcohol manufacturing unit at Barapani was busted in a joint operation by the Kamrup Metro Excise Department and Meghalaya Excise Department. Acting on a tip-off, the authorities intercepted a truck bearing registration number AS-11-AC-9144 at Khanapara, carrying 10,000 labels of an Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) whiskey brand, which led to the discovery of the illegal manufacturing unit.
During interrogation, the truck driver disclosed information about the Barapani-based manufacturing unit, revealing about the illegal operations. Assam Excise Commissioner Jitu Doley stated that the bust would help prevent revenue leakage from such illegal manufacturing units.
The joint team seized more than 3,000 cases of IMFL meant for sale in Assam and Meghalaya, along with blending and Extra Neutral Alcohol (ENA) vats, rotary capping machines, empty bottles of various IMFL brands, brand labels, and holograms of both Assam and Meghalaya. The Assam team was led by Kamrup (Metro) Excise Department Superintendent Debajit Nath.
Meanwhile, earlier this year, in a significant operation to crack down on the illicit liquor trade, the Kamrup Excise Department conducted a raid at Bezpara near Hajo. The team seized a substantial amount of material used in the illegal production of liquor, including 150 litres of illicit liquor, 6000 kilograms of fermented wash, and 120 kilograms of starter cakes. All the confiscated materials were destroyed on the spot.
This operation highlighted the excise department’s ongoing efforts to curb the menace of illegal liquor production and consumption within the district.
