SHILLONG: The Captain Williamson Sangma State University, the first state-owned university in Meghalaya, became a landmark moment in the region's higher education sector when it was inaugurated by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday. Major dignitaries attending the function included Speaker Thomas A. Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Snaiwbhalang Dhar, Education Minister Rakkam Sangma, and Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal.

The campus of the university was inaugurated in January 2023. The construction had started in June 2018, and it has an investment of Rs. 16.96 crores. Originally envisioned in 2011 as Captain Williamson Sangma State Technical University, it was renamed in 2022 to encompass both technical and non-technical colleges across the state.

Named after Meghalaya's founding Chief Minister, Captain Williamson A. Sangma, this university will deliver quality higher education with research and innovation. While inaugurating it, Chief Minister Sangma called the university a future for the system of education in Meghalaya, which did not have a university of its own for over 50 years.

The university is functional, and all the state colleges are free to apply for affiliation. Crucially, for undergraduate and postgraduate programs, students from these affiliated colleges will not be required to take the Common University Entrance Test (CUET). For the travelling problems of students coming from Khasi and Jaintia Hills, the Chief Minister announced a Shillong campus.

Prof. Vasanthi Vijayakumar, the newly appointed Vice Chancellor, expressed commitment to delivering quality education and fostering holistic development.
