Shillong: The Jaintia National Council (JNC) on Saturday launched the ‘Save Jaintia Mission’ with the objective of securing the future of the next generation and addressing the long-neglected aspirations of the Jaintia people.
“We would like to announce the launch of the ‘Save Jaintia Mission.’ In this mission, we have five objectives, and the main purpose is to enhance our service to the people of ‘7 Huts,’ especially the Jaintia Hills,” said Wanshwa Suting, general secretary of JNC.
JNC president Sambormi Lyngdoh emphasized the council’s call for reforms in the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), stating, “Reforms in the JHADC are essential for greater autonomy and self-governance. There is an urgent need to address the lack of transparency and accountability in its functioning.” He further called for the recognition of the Pnar language as a state language, asserting, “We demand the inclusion of the Pnar language in the Meghalaya State Anthem and the State Language Act.”
The council also highlighted the need for immediate implementation of a job recruitment policy in cement companies to prioritize local youth, resolution of the boundary dispute between Meghalaya and Assam to ensure a clear demarcation, and a ban on small-scale mining to mitigate environmental and health hazards. The JNC urged the Meghalaya government to take immediate action on these demands, reiterating the importance of transparency, accountability, and self-governance in addressing the pressing issues of the Jaintia community.
