SHILLONG: KC Lights, a school choir from Kiddies Corner Secondary School, Shillong, has been making India proud on the international stage. Since its inception in 2013, the choir, currently comprising 24 students, has won seven gold medals at prestigious global competitions. Brian Wahlang, the school's headmaster and choir director, explained the unique journey of the group.
"We were founded in 2013, but every year, when the children pass out from school, we get another batch. So, every year a new choir. I think everyone loves the music and what happened. We produce musicals every year in school, and once after the musical, children were feeling really bored. So they thought, why not form a choir? And that's what we did," Wahlang said. Under Wahlang's guidance, the choir has performed in several countries, including Malaysia, Bali, Thailand, and Sri Lanka, where they secured their gold medals. Their most recent achievement was in Malaysia last year.
Looking to the future, KC Lights has been invited to represent India in three international competitions next year-the Afro-Asia Pacific Games in Mauritius, an event in Vienna, Austria, and another in Thailand. However, sponsorship challenges may limit their participation. "Because of not being able to get sponsorship... let's see what happens. Wherever we are able to raise funds, which place we are able to go to, we'll go there," he stated.
