shillong: In a significant breakthrough in the ongoing crackdown against insurgent activities, the Ri-Bhoi District Police have apprehended the finance secretary of the banned militant outfit Kangleipak Communist Party – People’s War Group (KCP-PWG). Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the police conducted a swift counter-insurgency operation on the evening of April 21 and arrested one Khundongbam Herojit Meitei from a rented residence at Nongthymmai, 15th Mile, Byrnihat.
The operation was launched following credible information that Meitei had been hiding in the area and was actively engaged in subversive activities, including extortion, both within Meghalaya and across neighbouring states.
The arrest, made at approximately 8:30 PM, led to the seizure of two mobile phones and other incriminating materials. Upon preliminary interrogation, Meitei confessed to being an active member of the KCP (PWG) and admitted to collecting funds on behalf of the outfit.
Authorities believe that Meitei had taken shelter along the Assam-Meghalaya border to evade intensified security action in Manipur, where state and central forces have been tightening operations against various insurgent groups. Initial investigations also suggest possible links with militant operatives based in Myanmar and Nepal, pointing to a wider network of criminal conspiracy.
Police records indicate that Meitei has a history of criminal involvement. He was previously arrested in Manipur for possession of illegal firearms and in Dimapur in 2018 in connection with a drug trafficking case.
A case has been registered at Nongpoh Police Station under relevant sections of law, and an in-depth investigation is currently underway.
