Meghalaya Launches Multi-Crore Road Project to Improve Connectivity

MEGHALAYA: Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has officially launched the construction of the Nongpoh-Umden-Sonapur (NUS) road in a ceremony held at Umden, Ri Bhoi district.

The construction plan for the NUS road is divided into two phases- Phase one will span 20 kilometers from Nongpoh to Umden, with a budget allocation of Rs. 49.53 crore under the state’s road development plan. Phase two will cover 38.6 kilometers from Umden to Sonapur, funded under PMGSY III Batch I for Rs. 47.20 crore.

The completed road will feature a 5.5-meter-wide intermediate lane to enhance safety and efficiency for commuters.

Deputy Chief Minister Tynsong underscored the state government’s commitment to improving infrastructure across Meghalaya during the foundation-laying ceremony.

Tynsong detailed the funding allocations, which include Rs. 1,100 crore under the state plan, Rs. 1,100 crore from PMGSY, Rs. 400 crore from the Central Infrastructure Fund (CIRF), Rs. 140 crore from the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF), and Rs. 2,000 crore from the World Bank.

Nongpoh MLA Mayral Born Syiem expressed heartfelt gratitude to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, and other stakeholders who contributed to making the project a reality.

Umsning MLA Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh, Nongpoh MDC Balajied Rani, and senior officials from the Public Works Department (PWD) Roads and Buildings attended the event.
