SHILLONG: A huge fire engulfed the house of Farsen Momin, son of Meghalaya's first Chief Minister, Capt. Williamson Sangma, on Tuesday afternoon, leaving the house badly damaged.

The residence in Hawakhana, Tura, was set on fire, and the Fire and Emergency Department was called upon to act instantly. Firemen fought the inferno for about an hour before managing to quell it. Thankfully, no injuries or deaths were recorded.

The fire allegedly broke out before noon and has been suspected as an electrical short circuit. An official investigation had not yet taken place to be certain of what caused it.

The burning house is situated within the compound that contains the ancestral home of Capt. Williamson Sangma. Authorities, however, affirmed that the original ancestral home was spared from the fire, avoiding additional damage to the historic structure.

The accident has raised fears among residents, considering the history of the home. Authorities have advised homeowners to be careful against electrical risks to avoid such incidents in the future.
