SHILLONG: In a significant move aimed at transforming the city’s commercial centre, the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) 2 government has announced that all hawkers and vendors operating in Khyndailad will be fully relocated by July 22. The date will mark the end of unauthorised vending in the area, effectively “freezing” all informal commercial activities from that point onward.

Tourism Minister and MDA 2 spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh, addressing the media on Monday, said, “The High Court verdict has strengthened our case, and by the 22nd of July, we expect complete compliance by all vendors. The total relocation of hawkers and vendors from Khyndailad will be completed before that date.”

Looking ahead, Lyngdoh also outlined the government’s ambitious plans for the post-relocation phase — a comprehensive pedestrianisation and beautification of the iconic stretch, extending from the entry point of Khyndailad to Jail Road on one side and Umsohsun on the other.

“There will be beautification, there will be pedestrianization, and only residents of the area will be issued vehicle passes. Even then, entry and exit will be time-bound,” Lyngdoh said, underlining the government’s intent to limit vehicular access and prioritize pedestrian safety.

Addressing concerns about access for local residents, Lyngdoh added, “Residents cannot randomly drive into the area. Specific hours will be designated for them to enter or leave. This is to ensure pedestrian safety and restore order in one of Shillong’s busiest zones.”
