Meghalaya: MeECL employees to protest non-receipt of salaries on Dec 15

Meghalaya: The employees of Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd (MeECL) has decided to hold a series of protests on December 15 against non-receipt of salaries.

The Coordination Committee of Registered MeECL Employees Associations and Unions (CCORMAU) on Friday in a meeting in Shillong announced to launch the agitation programmes.

Salaries of MeECL employees have been pending for the last two months.

CCORMAU also plans to stage a hunger strike on December 16 and 17. The employees will suspend all maintenance works during office hours from 10 am to 4 pm on December 21. To push for fulfillment of their demand the non-factory workers will go on a mass casual leave and march to the State Secretariat on January 12. On January 18, the workers' association will launch a total non-cooperation movement involving all – from the peon to the chief engineer.

The complete shutdown of service and non-cooperation will take place from January 22 in the event of non-payment of salaries up till that time.

They are also opposed to the proposed outsourcing of services debt-ridden public sector companies to private players. They condemn the proposed outsourcing of services of the non-profit public sector company to private players.

Speaking at the meeting a spokesperson said, "Denying salary to employees is a crime. Disbursement of salary must be done before the 10th of every month. Therefore, by denying the salaries of the employees for the last two months despite the fact that money was available, the management has committed a crime."

"Why is the management compelled to do so? Because they have chosen to sacrifice the interest of the employees, denying them the right to basic needs despite understanding the fact that the employees are going through a difficult time." Another speaker said they have the right to raise their voice as responsible citizens and employees of the organization.

The employees of Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited include engineers, officers, regular and contractual staff under the umbrella of CCORNU.
