Shillong: The Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills District has formally invited Ranjan Borah, president of Kutumba Suraksha Parishad (KSP), to a District Level Committee meeting on January 3, 2025. The meeting, which will include senior officials from various government departments, aims to discuss the management and maintenance of Mawjymbuin Cave in Mawsynram. This invitation follows KSP’s ultimatum threatening a road blockade at Byrnihat if their demand to resume Hindu rituals at the cave was not met by December 24.

Meanwhile, UDP MLA from Mawsynram, Ollan Singh Suin, expressed serious concern over the threats issued by KSP. “It has been brought to my notice that some Hindu organizations want the Mawjymbuin Cave to be open for worship. This matter is subjudice. However, over the last few months, they have been insistent,” Suin stated.

He further explained, “The district administration has made it clear that permission cannot be granted without approval from the local Dorbar, which has so far declined to issue a no-objection certificate. The administration has respected this decision, but now these organizations are resorting to threats and deadlines. This behaviour, particularly from groups in Assam, is a matter of serious concern.”

The Mawjymbuin Cave controversy continues to stir tensions, with local authorities attempting to mediate and resolve the issue peacefully.
