Shillong,: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a viral video clip showing police personnel handling the body of a female murder victim in East Garo Hills district without any covering, drawing public outrage over their apparent insensitivity.

“The death was handled openly without any covering and was visible to onlookers, which reflects insensitivity on the part of the police personnel,” stated MHRC Secretary L. Ch. Marak in an official release on Tuesday.

The victim was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend, and it was further alleged that the One Stop Centre (OSC) at Williamnagar failed to take appropriate action when the victim had sought help. In response, the Commission has directed the Superintendent of Police, East Garo Hills, to submit a detailed report. It has also instructed the Director of Social Welfare to submit a report along with a copy of the press clipping.
