MEGHALAYA: Syntar Klas Sunn, an independent MLA of Meghalaya passed away on Friday after he was tested Covid-19 positive.

Family sources informed that the MLA of Mawphlang died at his residence in Mawngap.

Sources said that among the unvaccinated MLAs, Syntar Klas Sunn was one of them.

With Sunn's death, the current assembly has lost five members since 2018. Congress MLA Clement Marak died in 2018, and Speaker Donkupar Roy breathed his last in 2019. Two more Congress MLAs David A Nongrum and Dr Azad Zaman died on February 2 and March 4 this year respectively.

Sunn was the chairperson of the assembly committee on environment, and the father of national footballer Eugeneson Lyngdoh.

In the year 2016 he retired as the chief engineer of state PHE and then joined politics and won the Mawphlang seat in the 2018 assem.

Chief Minister of Meghalaya wrote, "I am saddened beyond words by the sudden demise of Sh. S K. Sunn, Hon'ble MLA of Mawphlang Bah Sunn always went above & beyond his call of duty to serve the people and I admired his hands-on approach to public service. My deepest condolences to his family, loved ones & admirers".

Meghalaya registered four more deaths during the last 24 hours taking the State's toll tally to 36 on Saturday. While three deaths were reported from East Khasi Hills, one is from West Garo Hills district. The number of COVID cases also continued to surge with 112 cases reported. This is the third day that 100 odd cases have been reported in the past three days. There are presently 2,038 active cases. Meanwhile, 2,483 COVID-infected patients have recovered till date.
