Meghalaya MLAs Write To Chief Minister Conrad Sangma On Road Project

SHILLONG: Four MLAs of Meghalaya cutting across party lines have written to the State Government urging it to speed up the preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the two-laning of the Mawngap – Ranikor Road.

In a joint representation sent on Tuesday, the MLAs – SK Sunn, HM Shangpliang, Pius Marwein and Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar – said that since the actual construction is expected to start at least a year after the DPR is prepared, they felt that the study should not in any way be delayed and should start at the earliest while the funding requirement for the project is being sorted out.

“In this context, while NHIDCL may be requested by the State to update on the DPR proposal preparation, the MoRTH may be requested to update on the status of this road,” the MLAs said in a letter to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.

According to Sunn, on the basis of some information it is made to understand that the delay has occurred mainly due to the fact that all the roads which are principally approved as National Highways are being reviewed by the Ministry concerned for further action. He added that in the process it may jeopardize the fate of the Mawngap-Ranikor Road project unless the State emphasises its importance and urgency.

Sunn informed that the conversion of the single lane carriage way into standard two-laning has been approved in principle by the Centre.
