SHILLONG: The North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has initiated the process of forming an enquiry committee following an assault on Hindi Department faculty member Dr Alok Singh, who was allegedly attacked by students inside his campus office on April 24.

“It has come to the notice of the administration. I am speaking on behalf of the Vice Chancellor in charge Professor Sungoh and that Administration of the University itself. We have information that was brought to the notice of the administration last evening that a member of the teaching fraternity was there towards him by miscreants. We don’t know who they are right now,” Pyngrope said. He added that the university has learnt the victim has already lodged a formal complaint. “As of now, we have come to know that the victim has already filed the FIR, and the police are looking into the matter and investigating what actually transpired between the victim and the miscreants.”

The administration stated, “On behalf of the university and the administration, we condemn such kind of violence inside the university campus, and we assure you that the security of the teaching fraternity, as well as the students, is of utmost importance to the university administrators. And we hope that such a kind of violence will not occur on the university campus.”

Pyngrope further stated, “From the side of the university, a committee will be formed to enquire, to form an enquiry committee, which will look into the matter—what happened and why such a kind of incident happened on the university campus.”

He clarified that the university cannot at this stage assign blame.

When asked about Professor Alok Singh’s allegation that members of the NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU)—including the union president—were involved, Pyngrope maintained the university’s neutral position until the investigation is complete.

“We cannot comment. It is his statement. It depends. So we were not present at the scene of the act wherever it happened, so we cannot comment on whether it was the president of NEHUSU, the secretary of NEHUSU, or the professor themselves who did something. Only after the enquiry is done can we comment on who is at fault.”

He concluded by saying, “The police are doing their job. So hopefully, the police will come out with the solution.”
