SHILLONG: A faculty member in the Hindi Department at the campus of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Dr Alok Singh, was violently assaulted in his office on Thursday evening, allegedly by members of the NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU).

Recounting the ordeal, Dr Singh stated that the assault took place around 4:45 PM on April 24, while he was in his departmental chamber. According to him, six students stormed into his office, locked the door, and began to physically attack him, while others stood guard outside to prevent any intervention.

“Two of the students held my hands while four others assaulted me. After some time, they called the students who had been guarding the door to continue the assault. They also did not allow anyone from the department to come near my chamber while I was suffering,” he said.

He described the attack as unprovoked and without warning. “I kept asking them what happened; tell me. But they kept beating me. They said, You are doing politics here… Bringing different ideologies here. They kept hitting me nonstop. They kicked me and punched me; even when I fell down, they would pick me up and keep assaulting,” he recalled.

Before initiating the attack, the alleged assailants seized his phone, browsed through its contents, disconnected all computer cables, and took away his smartwatch, suspecting it might conceal a hidden camera.

Dr Singh further alleged that one of the students picked up a pair of scissors from his desk and pressed it against his throat while threatening to kill him.

Emotionally shaken, Dr Singh expressed his anguish over being targeted by his own students. He claimed the attackers told him to leave the university and confirmed that he could identify them, alleging they were NEHUSU members and some of his own students. Following the incident, he was taken to the civil hospital for medical treatment.
