SHILLONG: The President of the North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU), Sandy Sohtun, has been arrested by East Khasi Hills police for allegedly assaulting an assistant professor of the university’s Hindi department, Dr Alok Singh.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed the arrest on Monday, stating, “So far only one arrest has been made; the law will take its own course.” He added that Sohtun would be “produced to court accordingly.” The incident occurred on April 24.
In an FIR submitted before the Officer-in-Charge of Mawkynroh Outpost on April 25, Dr Alok Singh stated, “I am deeply saddened to inform you that on April 24, at around 4.45 p.m., the president of NEHUSU, along with five accomplices, forcibly locked me inside my chamber in the department. During this incident, they physically assaulted me and threatened to kill me by holding a scissors to my neck.” The FIR also named five others alleged to be involved in the assault.
Narrating the incident to reporters during a protest staged by the teaching fraternity on Friday, Dr Singh said, “NEHUSU president and five other students came to my chamber and closed the door. I asked what happened; he said, Sit down and don’t speak, while two others were holding my hands and were continuously beating me from my head, hands and legs.”
“When I asked what the matter was, they said I was doing politics. But I had not done anything wrong. This incident had really affected me mentally and physically. Therefore, I pray for justice and for my safety and security,” he added.
