Meghalaya: NPP Mulling Post-Poll Alliance With BJP, Says CM Conrad K Sangma

SHILLONG : As the Assembly Election 2023 in Meghalaya is approaching, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Sunday, stated that the National People's Party (NPP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will only form a post-poll alliance if the situation demands.

According to Sangma, NPP has always fought elections on their own and they want to continue it this way. The NPP national president is of the view that there are ideological differences between BJP and NPP, and they are not on the same page regarding various matters. The Chief Minister clarified during the financial assistance to eligible youth groups under the Youth Engagement Through Empowered Youth Organisations (YESS) that, National People's Party will not form any pre- poll alliance for the upcoming state election.

Sangma mentioned that they never had any pre-poll alliance with any party in any states in the previous elections and neither they would do that in the nearing Assembly Elections 2023 in Meghalaya. The NPP president said that the BJP is seeing unrealistic dreams of forming a government of their own.

In the 2018 Meghalaya Assembly Election, NPP fought alone and stood in the second position as Congress was in lead with 21 seats. Later on, NPP formed an alliance with the BJP and few other regional parties to form a government in Meghalaya.

BJP is a minor ally with just two MLA's. After Conrad K Sangma publicly announced that NPP will not engage in any sort of pre-poll alliance, the relationship between both the parties became arduous. According to the reports, BJP is now working out strategies against NPP in the Christian majority Meghalaya for the election next year. Ernest Mawrie, the President of BJP in Meghalaya stated that, the party has already started working for pre-poll campaign to involve more and more people in the party. The party will hold door to door campaigns to spread awareness and importance to bring the saffron party in power. Booth level committees across the state will also be carried out by BJP.
