SHILLONG: Two off-duty guardsmen from the Meghalaya Secretariat Home Guards foiled an attempted generator theft near the 3rd Secretariat premises on Friday, December 19.

While passing by the area, Lingbirth Arengh and Darmiki Langstang noticed suspicious activity. Acting swiftly, they apprehended the individual attempting to steal the generator.

The incident was promptly reported to their superiors, and the suspect was handed over to officers from Sadar Police Station for further investigation and appropriate action. Their alertness and swift action averted the theft, underscoring the vital role of vigilant security personnel in protecting public property.

Meanwhile, earlier this week, alert locals thwarted a bold attempt to steal equipment from a mobile tower in Aohata, Baksa district of Assam.

Two individuals, Mofidul Islam and Asadul Ali from Khorishalar, Barpeta, were apprehended while descending from the tower, situated at Ranjit Kalita's residence.

The duo, believed to have been involved in similar thefts at other mobile tower sites, were confronted by an enraged mob as they descended. The angry locals physically assaulted the thieves before law enforcement arrived at the scene.

In another incident earlier this month, the Guwahati police had arrested a gang of five individuals for their alleged involvement in a statewide grand theft auto operation. Sources reveal that the Crime Branch of the Guwahati Police apprehended the suspects based on specific intelligence inputs.

Although the source did not disclose the details of the arrest, it was revealed that the five suspects had been actively involved in vehicle theft for several years. The gang typically targets parked vehicles in public areas where the owners are not present.
