SHILLONG: Indian currency worth more than Rs 10 lakh was received by the police from the poll-bound Northeastern state of Meghalaya. This is the second major bust of unaccounted cash in the state in the last few days after the Model Code of Conduct was activated in the state ahead of the assembly elections.

The Chief Election Officer of the state, F R Kharkongor mentioned that this huge amount of money was recovered from the South West Garo Hills district of the state. This recovery takes the total recovery of unaccounted cash to more than Rs 20 Lakhs since the activation of the Model Code of Conduct.

According to reports, members of the flying squads of the district seized the cash from four individuals as they could not provide any proof of the source or the reason for carrying this huge amount of cash accounting for Rs 10.35 lakh with them. Their claims were under investigation as mentioned by the chief election officer.

He had also commented previously that 34 out of the 60 constituencies of the state have been identified as "expenditure sensitive" and asked the Chief Secretary of the state of Meghalaya to take any necessary steps to control pre-election discrepancies in the state.

It is important to note that there is just one month left before the state goes to the election for the legislative elections. Elections for the 60 members Meghalaya Assembly has been announced for February 27 and the counting will take place on March 2.

Along with Meghalaya, citizens of Tripura and Nagaland also go for voting in the coming month and several local as well as national parties have picked up the pace in their campaigns.
