Meghalaya peasant gifts maize bundle to COVID-19 warriors

SHILLONG: As Meghalaya has recorded seven new COVID-19 fatalities, and 489 new cases while 632 recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours, a good samaritan has impressed netizens with a simple deed of kindness. A villager from Chimagre Songittal in the East Garo Hills district of the state took a bundle of maize from his own farm as a gift for the medical professionals and workers. His act of kindness and the pictures of the man has gone viral on social media.

Meghalaya Chief Minister's office mentioned about the farmer with a kind appreciation. Similarly, many users have been commenting on the incidnt.

CORONA UPDATE: After a COVID-positive case was detected in the Lumkynsai locality under Smit Pyllun, the district administration has marked the area as a containment zone, effective from July 5 onwards.

According to the DC's order, no person or vehicle shall be allowed into the Containment Zone area and the residents of the locality shall also be barred from venturing outside. The locals have been asked to stay within their homes.

Meanwhile on Monday, Meghalaya recorded nine more COVID-19 fatalities, and 377 new infections while 448 persons recovered from the infection, informed health authorities. The toll has also gone up to 871. There are 4,354 total active cases whereas 46,676 persons have recovered from the virus so far.

Of the nine new COVID-19 fatalities, four were recorded in East Khasi Hills district; two in West Jaintia Hills; and one death each in South West Garo Hills, South West Khasi Hills and West Garo Hills districts.

Of the 377 new infections, 134 cases has been registered in Ri-Bhoi district; 128 in East Khasi Hills district; 37 in West Khasi Hills; 27 in West Garo Hills; 23 in West Jaintia Hills; 11 in East Jaintia Hills; seven in East Garo Hills; four in North Garo Hills; and two cases each in South Garo Hills, South West Garo Hills and South West Khasi Hill districts.

Of the 4,354 total active cases, as many as 1,487 cases are in East Khasi Hills district; 818 in Ri-Bhoi; 577 in West Jaintia Hills; 467 in West Garo Hills; 261 in North Garo Hills; 195 in West Khasi Hills; 159 in East Garo Hills; 122 in South West Khasi Hills; 97 in East Jaintia Hills; 90 in South Garo Hills; and 81 in South West Garo Hills.
