Shillong: Meghalaya police on Saturday busted an interstate gold smuggling racket and apprehended five persons including a woman.

As per reports, acting on specific information, the police carried out a search operations and recovered gold biscuits from a passenger who was on his way to Guwahati from Shillong.

The seized gold weighs over 800 gm worth more than Rs 50 lakh.

The arrested person named Abu Bakkar was smuggling the gold biscuits to hand over the Saddique Ali and Sah Jahan of Assam's Barpeta district.

Following Bakkar's input, an operation was also conducted in Barpeta wherein over Rs 27 lakh cash was seized from Shah Jahan's possession.

Around five persons named Abu Bakkar, Shah Jahan, Md. Saddique Ali, Aziz Lyngdoh, and Subalin Kharbani have been nabbed in connection with the case.

In addition to this, police also recovered 10 mobile phones and seven ATM cards from their possession.

Taking to the micro-blogging site Twitter, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma appreciated the police department for their achievement.
