SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Police reported on Friday that security forces detained eight individuals suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals near the border town of Hallidayganj in West Garo Hills.
An officer stated that the eight individuals, who allegedly entered India illegally, are residents of Mitapukur and Sabar (Habra) in Bangladesh. The detainees have been identified as Pappu Sheikh (27), Alif Mal (39), Masirul Ojha (18), Arif Sheikh (37), Maherul Khan (19), Alif Mondol (35), Dalia Ojha, and Jhorina, according to officials.
Two live snakes were recovered from Pappu Sheikh and Alif Mondol, and the reptiles were handed over to the Wildlife Department. A case has been filed against the detainees under Section 14A(a) of the Foreigner’s Act and Section 12(1)(c) of the Passport Act.
Abraham T Sangma, Superintendent of Police (SP) for West Garo Hills district, stated, “This operation reflects our commitment to ensuring border security and addressing wildlife-related offenses. We are coordinating with relevant authorities to handle the case as per the law.”
Alert police and BSF personnel have successfully prevented several infiltration attempts along the over 400 km India-Bangladesh border in the past six months. However, the presence of unfenced sections, especially in riverine areas, still allows unscrupulous individuals to enter India clandestinely.
