Shillong: East Khasi Hills district police made important breakthroughs in at least three different cases related to dacoity and robbery involving hardcore criminals in the past two weeks. The first involved a robbery at Pomshutia fuel station last month by a gang of four criminals. These dacoits posing themselves as members of a militant outfit entered the fuel station counter on January 18 and decamped with Rs 2,40,000 at gunpoint.

Acting on intelligence reports about the possible movement of these gangs who masquerade themselves as members of a militant outfit, the police first apprehended one Phrankupar Nongrang (42) and a country-made revolver and ammunition was recovered from his possession.

Following investigation, the special team of the district police soon apprehended Kularshai Lyngdoh, Klostar Marngarand and Thomas Nongseij. The Superintendent of Police, Shillong city, Steve Rynjah said these are possibly part of the inter-district organized gang of robbers especially when investigation gave inference to the recent dacoity at a fuel station in Ri-Bhoi district. The arrested persons told the investigation team that they were supposed to carry similar activities before they were nabbed by the police.

Another success was scored when two persons who are known to be bike lifters were arrested. They were picked up from Lumawbah area of Shillong after their suspicious movement in a motorcycle was noticed by the police. They were chased by the public and finally overpowered. They are identified as Albert Kurbah and Barbar Namsaw. “The recovery of a country-made revolver that was cocked indicate that the criminals were about to fire before being caught”, Rynjah stated.

The district police also seized one truckload of batteries stolen from various mobile tower stations. Stating that the police acted in a meticulous manner to detect their modus operandi, Rynjah said, “We intercepted the truck of batteries that were destined towards Byrnihat area”. The arrested were Roopchand Ali, Sahib Ali and Mahmud Marak and the trio hails from different districts of Assam.
