Meghalaya Police seeks clarity on use of tinted glass in VIP vehicles from the government

Shillong: Meghalaya Police has sought a written clarification from the government to know the number of VIPs who have been exempted from using tinted glasses in their vehicles. The letter was dispatched a week back to the State Secretariat. Confirming this to The Sentinel on Tuesday, Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Bikram Sangma said the department was prompted to seek clarity because there are officials who claimed themselves to be falling under certain security category and hence used the tinted glass in their vehicles.

“Our traffic boys on the roads have to refrain themselves from taking any punitive action if an official cited the security aspects for using the tinted glasses,” stated Sangma, adding, “If the list of the officials who are permitted to use the tinted glasses are provided to us, our men can act boldly against any violators even if they are senior officials commuting in a government car.”

Alluding to the Supreme Court ban on the use of tinted glass, restricting visions beyond the permissible limit as fixed under the Motor Vehicles Act, the SP also informed that private vehicles using tinted glasses have re-emerged in Shillong city and many of those comes from other districts of the State where there is less monitoring. He said that quite a number of vehicles were intercepted, fined and asked to remove the tinted labels in their windscreens and rear windows.

Moreover, the SP also informed The Sentinel that green stripe taxis which were earlier permitted to solely ferry passengers in the rural areas can now commute in Shillong city. There are around 500-odd green stripe taxis plying outside the city limits. The green stripe taxis were at the receiving end in the past because the police had to crack on them for commuting passengers within city limits. Their persistent demands from the transport authorities bore fruit and they will be allowed to ply like any other cabs with valid documents in the entire district.
