SHILLONG: Despite its setbacks, the Congress party in the State is confident that it will be able to set up candidates in all the 60 Assembly constituencies in the 2023 Assembly election.

It may be mentioned that in November last year, the Congress suffered a split after 12 of its MLAs led by former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma left the party and aligned themselves with the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

"It won't be difficult for us to get candidates for all the sixty seats," Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Vincent Pala said.

In February this year, the remaining five legislators of the party decided to extend their support to the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) Government, which also has the BJP as its partner.

The five have since been suspended by the party.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Pala said that the party was reorganizing the block Congress committees in the five constituencies whose legislators decided to align themselves with the MDA.

Meanwhile, on what will be the next step of the party on the five suspended MLAs, the MPCC president said that the AICC will decide.

Pala informed that on Monday the MPCC had a meeting to discuss the issue since even after the show-cause was served, the five legislators did not reply to it.
