SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC) has condemned the “ugly and unprecedented” incident at Ichamati, Shella on February 28 wherein one person died when he was attacked by a mob. Extending their condolences to the members of the bereaved family, the MPYC also stated that its prayers and sympathy are there for the early recovery of all those injured and affected by the communal clash. “We appeal to everyone to maintain peace, harmony and safety of all the people,” MPYC president Richard Marak said. The MPYC also reminded everyone the nation’s inherent commitment to peaceful coexistence. According to Marak, violence is not a solution to any problem.

“The people, particularly the youth, should unite showing the way for a more caring and equal country. Those who truly love their country would not want it to be divided by hate, fear and violence,” the MPYC said.

Meanwhile, the MPYC also said that Friday’s incident is not an isolated incident.

“This incident proves beyond reasonable doubt how Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 2019 is capable of dividing the nation on communal lines. The government in the Centre needs to understand India and its people and stop imposing viciously their political will upon us,” the MPYC president added.

We have been warning that the implications of CAA are wide ranging and opens up an unprecedented dangerous future and ramifications thereof. The dire implications of CAA is not just for a particular community, this is vastly inter-sectional,” Marak added.

He also said that the nation has never seen the level of communal disharmony and hatred that one sees today across the country.

The MPYC also said that the current mayhem has the potential to escalate into a full civil war and a huge humanitarian crisis.

“It is the warning that the government must listen to its people. It is a spontaneous rising against fear, hate, discrimination and violence, and the dangerous agenda of militarist Hindutva nationalism. It is the rejection of government’s failures to address the real and genuine issues of the people,” the MPYC said.

Meanwhile, the MPYC also said that it would continue to demand that the government should repeal the “dangerous and divisive” CAA, and restore peace and harmony and ensure that justice be served.
